Accountability in Government

What happens when a government decision is wrong or harmful?

Government accountability requires credible ways to question decisions, establish responsibility and obtain correction or remedy. Oversight needs sufficient independence, information and authority to act. Public institutions also need to learn from what went wrong and from what served people well, carrying that understanding into decisions and practice. An explanation after the event is insufficient if preventable failures continue. Citizens can participate, and effective oversight also needs institutions equipped to examine and challenge state power.
