Conservation aims to protect living systems and support the conditions in which they can continue or recover. Responsible choices require ecological evidence and attention to people whose homes, livelihoods and relationships are connected to a place. Those affected should help define goals and examine consequences. We can learn from what protects or restores life well and change approaches that cause avoidable harm. Success needs to be assessed through actual outcomes for habitats and communities, with clear responsibility for follow-through.
