What kind of relationship am I having with a machine?

A conversation with a machine may feel useful, comforting or easier to begin than a conversation with another person. That experience can be acknowledged without embarrassment. It does not establish that the system has feelings, understands as a person does or carries reciprocal obligations.

We can ask what the interaction helps us express or do, how private information is handled and whether it leaves room for our own judgment and human relationships. When a question needs someone to be present, notice changing circumstances or take practical responsibility, an AI response cannot supply all of that. It may help us find words for a conversation we choose to have with a person.
