Living with dignity is not about perfection. It is an ongoing practice of self-respect, responsibility, curiosity, and care. It may be expressed through caring for our health, setting healthy boundaries, communicating honestly, learning from mistakes, respecting differences, contributing to our communities, and taking responsibility for our choices. Through Istima, dignity often becomes most visible during life's challenges. We discover it when we choose integrity over convenience, curiosity over certainty, responsibility over blame, and respect over dehumanization. Dignity is not something reserved for extraordinary moments. It is found in the everyday choices through which we relate to ourselves, one another, and the world around us.
