Relationships

How can we build a relationship that supports both connection and agency?

A workable relationship gives people room to be heard, contribute and understand what they are agreeing to. Care grows through attention and conduct as well as feeling. Differences need honest conversation, and reflection can help us recognise recurring misunderstandings or our own part in conflict. Responsibilities may be unequal where capacity, dependency or power differs. Repair requires a willing response from those responsible; one person's effort cannot create mutuality or guarantee safety.

We can ask, “What is this like for you?” and listen before explaining our own position. Feeling heard need not wait until every disagreement is resolved.

A question to sit with (optional): What helps this relationship work, what needs attention, and which part is mine to contribute?
