How can societies learn from experience and mature in their cultures and institutions?

Collective Istima concerns how societies learn through shared experience and mature in their cultures and institutions. Reflection includes revisiting public accounts, examining evidence and listening to people whose experiences were overlooked. Different communities may understand the same period differently, especially where their experiences and power differ. The direction offered by The Human Constitution is toward greater dignity, mutual respect and wisdom, with less unnecessary conflict and harm. Maturity requires that understanding inform institutions and practice. It is not established simply by calling an event a lesson or assuming that change is progress.

Public reflection also needs space for testimony, remembrance and experiences that do not fit a shared story. People should be able to participate without being required to disclose painful personal histories.
