Istima
What is Istima?
Istima describes learning, growing and maturing through experience. To mature, we need to reflect on what we are learning and allow that understanding to shape how we live, relate and take responsibility.
We may be growing before we recognise it. Sometimes, only afterwards can we see what an experience revealed, what we misunderstood or what helped us move forward. Reflection gives us an opportunity to question our interpretations and consider what to continue, change or repair.
Istima happens at different, connected levels. Individually, it concerns our personal growth. In relationships and groups, it concerns how we learn to understand one another, communicate and handle differences. In organisations, it includes developing a culture that supports dignity, honest feedback and responsible use of power.
Within societies, Istima concerns how cultures and institutions mature toward greater dignity, mutual respect and wisdom, with less unnecessary conflict and harm. Between nations, it includes learning through cooperation, conflict, war and peace—and taking responsibility for how that understanding shapes our relationships and decisions.
As a species, we are also learning from the effects of how we treat the planet, other animals and the living world. Our responsibility is to reflect on those effects and mature in our approach, with dignity, decency and respect for all forms of life.
This learning can come through joy, success and cooperation as well as difficulty. Suffering is neither a requirement nor a guarantee of maturity. Each person’s unfolding learning deserves respect, while what we already understand calls for a responsible response.
A question to sit with (optional): What are we learning through this experience, and how can that understanding help us act with greater dignity, care and responsibility?
