Istima & Suffering
What if I am hurting and do not know what this experience means?
When you are suffering, getting through the day may already ask a great deal. You may want someone to listen, help with something practical or simply stay beside you. You do not need to explain what this experience is teaching you in order to deserve care.
Istima makes room for learning we may recognise only later. When there is room, reflection can help us understand our responses, choices and what has become clearer. Continued pain does not mean that we have failed to learn. Responsibility for harm remains with those who caused it, and protection or other clear duties may need attention now. Some questions need time and a conversation with someone trustworthy; a written answer cannot know the whole of what you are living.
A question to sit with (optional): What needs care or protection now, and would listening, company or practical help be welcome? Reflection can wait until there is room.
