Interpersonal Istima
How can we mature through relationships and groups while recognising our different responsibilities?
Interpersonal Istima concerns how we learn, grow and mature through relationships and groups. Affection, cooperation, misunderstanding and conflict can reveal patterns in how we communicate, exercise power and handle differences. Reflection helps us recognise our part, hear other perspectives and develop more mutual respect, with less unnecessary conflict. Shared experience does not make responsibility for harm equal. One person's reflection cannot supply another's willingness to listen or repair. Respect for unfolding learning belongs alongside necessary boundaries and accountability.
We can ask one another what being heard would look like before trying to interpret the experience. Listening should leave space for a different account and for a person who is not ready to talk.
A question to sit with (optional): What has become clearer about my part, and what response is mine to make without taking over the other person's responsibility?
