Companion Animals

What does an animal depend on me to provide?

Living with a companion animal can bring affection, enjoyment and a lasting relationship of care. It also creates responsibility for needs the animal cannot arrange for itself. We need to consider appropriate care, space, daily attention and long-term security, including when our circumstances change. Affection should lead us to ask what serves the animal's welfare, even when that differs from our convenience. Learning about the animal and reflecting on our care are part of carrying that responsibility well.

The illness or loss of a companion animal may matter deeply. Someone who listens should respect the place that relationship holds, rather than deciding that the grief is too much.

A question to sit with (optional): Can I meet this animal's needs over time, and what is my plan if my circumstances change?
