When does conviction become closed to examination?

Strong convictions can guide a life without settling every question. The concern here is what happens when questioning is forbidden, contrary evidence is dismissed automatically or belonging depends on repeating a claim. We can examine that conduct without labelling an entire religious, political or philosophical tradition as incapable of learning.
