When is authority justified, and how can it be questioned?

Authority can come from a role, agreement, expertise or law. Each gives a different basis and limit for making decisions. We can ask whether authority is competent, accountable and open to appropriate challenge. A role can require direction without granting unlimited control. Those affected need ways to raise concerns, especially when refusal carries consequences.
