What should education make possible for the learner?

Education can help people develop knowledge, abilities, judgment and the confidence to keep learning. Learners need opportunities to ask questions, practise, reflect and receive feedback. Teachers carry responsibilities for guidance, subject knowledge and the conditions in which learning takes place. Their authority should support growing agency, with expectations suited to the learner's capacities. Curriculum and methods can be debated while we still ask whether an education helps people understand the world and participate in it with dignity and responsibility.
