How do rights and responsibilities support dignity without becoming conditions for it?

Rights protect our freedom, safety and participation, including when we cannot carry much responsibility. Responsibilities concern how we use our capacities, honour commitments and respond to our effects on others. They grow and change with our understanding, power, role and circumstances. The Human Constitution expresses this as being born with rights and maturing into responsibilities. Reflecting on our experience helps us recognise what is ours to carry. Responsibility sustains the conditions in which dignity can flourish; it is never the price of a person's human worth.
