Rights are freedoms, protections, and opportunities that help people live with dignity. They recognize that every person possesses inherent worth and deserves protection from abuse, exploitation, discrimination, and unnecessary restriction. Rights help create the conditions in which people can develop, participate, contribute, and thrive. The Human Constitution fully supports the importance of human rights and the historic contribution of frameworks such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Rather than replacing these foundations, it seeks to build upon them by exploring an additional question: if we are born with rights, how do we mature into responsibilities? Through Istima, humanity continues learning how freedom, dignity, responsibility, and cooperation can develop together. Rights help protect dignity. Responsibilities help sustain the conditions in which dignity can flourish.
