Respect

Can I respect a person without agreeing with them or deferring to them?

Respect can mean basic humane treatment, admiration or deference to a role. These are different. In this framework, basic dignity does not have to be earned, while trust and authority need relevant grounds. We can question a decision or reject conduct without contempt. Reciprocity helps a relationship function, but another person's disrespect does not erase their humanity or our boundaries.

A question to sit with (optional): Which kind of respect is being requested: humane treatment, agreement, admiration or obedience?
