How can I correct false information without claiming to know the speaker's intent?

A false or misleading claim and an intention to deceive are different things. The latter needs additional evidence. We can check the claim, identify the specific error and make correction proportionate to its reach and consequences. We can acknowledge uncertainty without giving unsupported claims equal standing. If we shared an error, correcting it is part of taking responsibility.
