National identity provides many people with a sense of belonging, history, culture, language, and shared experience. The Human Constitution explores our right to value and preserve these aspects of identity and our responsibility to respect the dignity and contributions of other peoples and cultures. Through Istima, national identity can evolve beyond separation or superiority and become an appreciation of the unique gifts each culture brings to humanity. In an increasingly interconnected world, national identity and global cooperation do not need to be opposites. Every nation carries knowledge, traditions, perspectives, and strengths that can enrich the larger human story.
